I actually have read Ulysses, but I'm the first to admit that I didn't get it and it was a miracle that I made it through. Tried to read Proust once but that's never going to happen. Did read Hawking in college; it's not that bad until you try to explain it to someone at a party.
Who's this Obama fellow? Is he a new author I should be on the lookout for?
I have absolutely not read Ulysses, but did read the Dubliners and did not understand it. I tried to read War and Peace over Christmas break one year and had to quit when the semester started up. That and I still had 3/4 of the book left.
I tried to read Ulysses and didn't make it that far. It does not interest me enough to try again. I liked the Dubliners, but it helped that I was reading it for an Irish lit. class and we could discuss it as we read.
I read Streak's Blog. Honest. Sometimes it's a miracle that I make it through, sometimes, I can't make it all the way through, and sometimes I don't get it. People often don't respond well when I talk about Streak's Blog at parties, so I have given up. Maybe it would help if I read if for a class.
HA! Good one Steve! When I clicked back, I literally forgot the Bible was listed as #4 and somehow had it in my feeble mind that it was #6. Needless to say, I haven't read Hawking's, Brief History of Time, though I did see several of the PBS specials.
So, yes, I have read the Bible! Several times, aamof.
I haven't read Hawking, or Dawkins, or Rushdie's Midnight's Children -- although I did read The Satanic Verses. I never made it through War and Peace either, despite good intentions. But I've read the others (I had a friend who was writing his dissertation on Joyce walk me through Ulysses). And honestly, Dreams from My Father tops that list for me -- but maybe because it's the only one I've read in this decade...

ReplyDeleteI've only read 4 and 6 on the list. Maybe 10, but I'd have to skim it again to be sure.
ReplyDeleteI gave up trying to talk about math or physics at parties a while ago. Turns out anecdotes about Department of State get more traction.
