Georgia about to execute and innocent man

By all accounts, at the very least, there is more than reasonable doubt about his guilt.

Which reminds me of the very clear truth that American Christians only believe the Bible when it serves their political beliefs. That passage Monk pointed us to in Exodus suggests that God would be very angry with the execution of an innocent man, yet I see no hand-wringing from the right. No fears that they might be aiding and abetting an injustice. No, from my conservative friends, all I hear is the morality, or Biblical support for the death penalty.

Sigh.

Tonight we prayed for Troy Davis at Mass. May God intervene in his life.

Troy Davis is dead. At the end, he asked God to have mercy and bless the souls of those who were about to take his life.

I would like join him in that prayer and to pray for Troy, as well.

Into Your hands, O merciful Savior, we commend Your servant Troy. Acknowledge, we humbly beseech You, a sheep of Your own fold, a lamb of Your own flock, a sinner of Your own redeeming. Receive him into the arms of Your mercy, into the blessed rest of everlasting peace, and into the glorious company of the saints in light. .

May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen

I also want to pray for all those who are hurting and mourn, that they may cast their care on Jesus, and know the consolation of His love.

Almighty God, look with pity upon the sorrows of all Your servants for whom we pray. We remember both families, the guards, the parol board, those who actually carried out the execution, Lord, in Your mercy; nourish them with knowledge of Your love; comfort them with a sense of Your goodness; lift up Your countenance upon them; and give them Your peace through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
