A study reported in The American Journal of Medicine this month found that 62 percent of American bankruptcies are linked to medical bills. These medical bankruptcies had increased nearly 50 percent in just six years. Astonishingly, 78 percent of these people actually had health insurance...
Don't tell me that the opponents of health care reform stand for families. I am sorry. I just don't buy it. Don't lecture me on self-reliance when the health care costs are beyond anything any single person outside Bill Gates could handle on their own. We have a very dear friend who is struggling to rehab after a severe injury. He has great insurance from his military service, and well he should, but without it, I shudder to think where his family would be.
The opponents scream rationing and socialism. The reality is actually rationing and a bizarre capitalism where avoiding paying for sick people makes people money.
What we have is not right. And what we are getting from conservatives on this is worse.

This is immoral. Period. Any system that forces a couple to divorce to save what they have accumulated for their children and each other is immoral.
I have personal experience of this. After my wife's funeral (she died of a multi-year struggle with cancer), a friend of hers commended me for not divorcing her. I was utterly shocked, and told her I had never even considered such a horrible thing.
She is a nurse and went on to tell me this very story that many people have to divorce to save the families assets from destruction.
I was beyond pain at the moment but to this day, it just makes my skin crawl, and I don't know if I could have brought myself to do that, even if she had wanted me to.
My cousin also experienced this, and refused to divorce his cancer stricken wife, and lost their house, business and all their retirement savings. He was left a broke widower living in a borrowed trailer.
This is wrong.
Isaiah 10:1-3 (NIV)
Woe to those who make unjust laws, to those who issue oppressive decrees, to deprive the poor of their rights and withhold justice from the oppressed of my people, making widows their prey and robbing the fatherless. What will you do on the day of reckoning, when disaster comes from afar? To whom will you run for help? Where will you leave your riches?
