Church missing giant panda balloon

And it cost between 5 and 7 grand. Yeah, that's the takeaway from this story. Not that this ridiculous church has a "Kung Fu Panda movie theme" to attract new members. Yeah, I will take them seriously.

But it does make this post from 2004 seem less far fetched.

Hey, it works for used cars.

I mean, without bullshit peddlers, there would be no market for giant inflatable gorillas. And that means less jobs.

I had a friend who was a pretty liberal Methodist who visited a fundie chruch that sprang up in the eighties in my home town.

She described it as all the glitz and glam of a Broadway show without any of the work and volunteerism normally associated with keeping a non-profit church running. You'd go to church, enjoy the show and return home saved without breaking a sweat.

Their pastor was really into gay-hating though.

I really think it is time to make some money off these fools.

Let's make up the craziest fundie bumper sticker and sell them for $20 a piece.

I am thinking: "Jesus loves confederates." Or Jesus was a Rebel , (along side a confederate flag.)"

That is BRILLIANT. I second.

This must be a specific brand of fundamentalists, because most shy away from all the ornate BS you find in some churches.

Steve-

It seems like this is the style of the newer, fundementalist mega churches.

I think you are right. I have never been to one, but they seem to be glitzy. I just think that isn't a wise use of funds.

I think the new fundies see market forces in the Bible. They are reading business books more than theology.

It's easy to "read" anything you want into a book you never open.

And I felt bad because one of our air conditioning units was stolen last week. I'm so glad they didn't get our giant panda. Yes, I'm being sarcastic.

Good word, Leighton. :)

I guess we should all be glad that this was not a giant inflatable Jesus-on-a-cross.

Tony, I am shocked that you haven't started marketing your church. Shocked!

But seriously, what happened to your AC?

Last week, some neighborhood boys jacked it for the copper which in turn they sell at metal scrapyards. There has been a rash of A/C unit thefts in Cleveland County, NC...four churches had units stolen last week, plus three homes (unoccupied, on the market) and two Dollar General stores.

But the economy isn't bad.

Copper theft might soon replace streetcorner cocaine and heroin sales as the most common entry level position for organized crime. That's a nasty development, Tony. Sorry to hear it.

Do you come across people who think the economy really isn't bad?

Leighton,

Sadly, yes. Its mostly older Christians who are settled in their retirements and typically don't pay a lot of attention to the world around them.
