I think you're right, it definitely wasn't an empire. They didn't even have the savoir faire to steal countries with the cunning use of flags.

I'll bet. Blue Latitudes sounds interesting. I've been on an Agatha Christie burn lately, and it's shocking sometimes how much attitudes about what is polite and decent have changed since the days of naked imperialism.
