I like a joke just as much as the next guy, especially preacher jokes. I'm not real sure why.
A joke making light of rape is horrible, but should we take McCain to task for something he said twenty-two years ago? Though I think a joke about rape would represent the lowest common denominator and does reveal much about his character, its not like its a policy decision. I mean, I hope nobody ever unearths anything stupid I said twenty-two years ago.
Now don't get me wrong, you know I'm no McCain fan, but this smacks of swiftboating. In reverse. Or something.
Tony, if true (and that is a reasonable question, btw) does it matter that it was 22 years ago? Would you ever tell a joke like that? I don't think so.
Swiftboating was about untrue allegations about Kerry during VN. If they were true, it would have been legit. Right?
Ideally, no, it shouldn't matter that it was twenty-two years ago. In other contexts this might be construed as unfair, becasue twenty-two years is a long time, plenty of time for someone to change. Has he changed? I don't know.
I think another reasonable question is does he feel the same way about rape now as he did then? Would he tell the same joke now?
And I know what swiftboating is, btw. That's why I said "in reverse."
I didn't mean to be combative. sorry about that. Perhaps I just didn't understand the swiftboating reference.
I think you are right in that there is much here we don't know about McCain. And like many here, I am not terribly interested in voting for him, but neither do I want to unfairly disparage him.
I don't think all of the swiftboating allegations were false, but that is another discussion that isn't really all that relevant now.
I wouldn't say that McCain's comments 22 years ago should be a major issue. There are plenty of other issues that are more substantive. That being said, he has made other idiotic statements. In front of others, he called his wife a cunt. Go ahead and Google it.
At best, the man has a bad temper and poor control over his mouth. At worst, he has a poor opinion of women. Either way, there are better choices than him.
Yeah, I know about that Steves, I was going to mention it myself, but don't like using that word.
I think, if true, all of these statements suggest that he has a problem with women. In fact, that is where my question started. All of us have lapses, and tell jokes that we shouldn't. But I don't think many of us would lapse and tell a joke that thought rape was funny.

Holy crap. Like I needed another reason to dislike the guy.

Neither am I terribly interested in him--as a Republican, I have been in a fix for a ridiculously long time.
And I didn't think you were combative, just Streak. :)

I apologize for including that word.
That's ok.
