This just in: Chuck Norris is an idiot

Saw this today and cannot let it go without comment. The great thinker/TV Texas Ranger/karate star, to his credit, first acknowledges the heroism of those on the VT campus who responded as they could to the attack. But then, as it seems is unavoidable among conservatives, he blames liberals for the shooting:
"I believe those who wield the baton of the secular progressive agenda bear significant responsibility for the escalation of school shootings. Even conservatives who refuse to speak when evil flourishes must acknowledge some culpability.

Insert boilerplate about teaching evolution means that people don't value life and act like monkeys, and that abortion means that we don't care about life, and of course that we have "pushed God aside" and no longer teach our children to obey the "thou shalt not kill." Because a) Chuck Norris would never glorify violence as a response to anything, and 2) all of those school shooters didn't believe that killing was wrong? I guess that is why the all kill themselves, because they are proud of their actions and don't expect any negative consequences.

But we can't end there. Norris is also a historian--perhaps of the level of Doug and Pat Robertson:
If we are ever to restore civility in our land and our schools, we must turn back the clocks to a time when such shocking crimes didn't even exist – when we valued life and respected one another much more then we do today. We must use the Bible (humanity's blueprint for life and ''bluebook'' for value) to retrain our youth about theirs and others' value as children of God, made in His image.
Yes, because when our country was more moral and more God centered, this kind of thing, according to Norris didn't even happen. I am sure those African Americans who were lynched in the American South by so-called Christians would beg to differ. Or those 19th century backwoodsmen who were taught from birth to "hate Indians." Or those who advocated or tolerated putting kids in coal mines because they were small and cheap.

Got to love that nostalgic world-view.

Maybe we should each, in turn, stand up and take personal responsbility for the actions of Seung-Hui Cho, for the actions and inactions of each and every student at VT, and for each and every teacher, school board member, judge, and Founding Father, who support or have supported, a secular education for students. Because, you know, conservatives are all about personal responsibility.

It could be our very own "I am Spartacus" moment.

Ah, the good old days. As someone that reads and follows the Bible (as much as I can), I wish that more people would do the same. As someone that is dismayed with the level of crime, I wish people would show more respect to other people. As someone that has worked with criminals in various capacities, I'd have to say that the causes of criminal behavior are complex and can't be blamed on secular progressives. I am sure that there are policies that can be blamed for certain specific problems, but Chuck doesn't mention any, so it is hard to discuss.

FWIW, Chuck, the worst school massacre occured back in the gold old days about 20 miles from where I live.

Bath School Disaster

FWIW, except for blaming some group and not providing examples, and wanting to turn back the clock, I thought he made some good points in regards to forgiveness.

Perhaps we could blame bad karate movies for some of the rise of violence. Or perhaps bad television shows that romanticize violence. ...

Steve, sorry to bring up the last comment discussion, but when I read your last line, I thought immediately of Sheryl Crow. After all, if she loses credibility on science issues with her suggestion on toilet paper, why should Chuck Norris be taken seriously on any moral issue when he blames secular progressives for a school shooting?

I can't believe you just opened a can o' whoop ass on Chuck Norris! See here for just a glimpse of what he is capable of: http://www.thechucknorrisfacts.com/

I didn't actually give Chuck a very hearty endorsement. I also didn't say that I wouldn't listen to any celebrity and did list several that had credibility, IMO. I chastised Chuck for his failure to state any specifics.

Gotta go...Charlie Sheen and I are going to discuss conspiracy theories.

Steve, I am partially giving you crap. Absolutely, you didn't endorse Chuck, but I was just pointing out how you responded to Sheryl. Both said ridiculous things, but one got the total boot and was compared to Tom Cruise! That is low.

:)

True, but Sheryl's was ridiculouser!

Chuck Norris can kick my ass (note, I said "kick") but I would rather deal with Sheryl. And I would rather dine with her, talk with her, etc. than a muscular idiot.

Yeah, yeah, I know. I am asking for it. But now that he quotes the Bible he can't just beat me up, right? Isn't that somewhere in the Bible?

Let's just say that I am not convinced that Chuck can read that well.

Streak- Is SOF traveling? Is she aware of the Sheryl Crow thing? Is there a poster on your wall?

Anyway, I have to stifle a vomit reflex when I start reading about how we need to turn the clock back to a time when...... As Streak noted there's been alot of progress that, not suprisingly, gets ignored by a rich, white, celebrity. Of course, if we turn it back too far then there wouldn't be kung fu movies and Chuck would probably be an agricultural or factory worker trying to make ends meet and we wouldn't be reading his remedies for society's ills. Every generation thinks their's is unique. Historians keep us humble by pointing out, especially in the area of human nature, that it just ain't so.

Hah. SOF has the list. But no poster.

BTW, Here is Educat's post. Check it out.

Anglican, forget Chuck Norris, Bruce Schneier is where it's at.

OK, how can Chuck decry violence at VA Tech and subsidize a "combat entertainment" industry at the same time?

Mark me down as not wanting to eat a meal with either one of them...now, if Angelina Jolie asked, I would probably agree, but that is way off topic.

One phrase that I hear quite frequently drives me nuts. People will say, "the founding fathers must be turning in their graves," when they complain about some legislation. Not only is it impossible to know what they would think, there are plenty of instances where they are clearly wrong.

Back to the original topic of blame. It will probably come as no suprise that there will be some litigation based on this incident. I am not involved with any, but I have heard about some interesting theories.

Streak said...

Wow. Angelina Jolie? Yeah, she is really reasonable compared to Sheryl Crow!

Oh, I see. Probably not there to talk. :)

Agreed on the founding fathers. I am convinced that most Americans see history as a known block of information that they happened to have learned in grade school. Any information that goes against that information is then suspect and counter to reality.

Streak, I just wanted to post this is regards to Angelina Jolie. I know it probably isn't as meaningful as Sheryl's TP conservation, but it is a nice effort ; )

And obviously a close reader of the Bible:

What does he want us to do, turn things back to the days of Cain and Abel?

Cause yeah, praying, talking to God and coming from a highly-religious environment obviously keep one from doing "things like that"

No true Christian in their right mind would vote for Huckabee who is the most lying, deceitful, sidestepping out and out hypocrite of them all.

Huckabee might want to exercise the Thou Shalt Not Bear False Witness

And Chuch Norris has to be the biggest phony alive not to see Huckabee for what he really is.

i saw him recently on fox (faux?) news badgering someone. i have no good words for him. as he was losing his argument he resorted to yelling and name calling rather than graciously bowing out of the argument. i guess he's learned little from the bible that he touts so much.
