I think this has a direct connection between fundamentalism's cognitive dissonance of living like a Christian or believing correct doctrine. It is a battle between orthodoxy and orthopraxy.
So if you are a conservative and quite possibly a Christian fundamentalist or at least colored by its belief system, believing right is more important than acting right. Makes perfect sense!
