America awakens to moral values
and reaches around
to pat its backside

I am amazed at this clarity
like discovering the sun after
nearly three score
years of life

Like awaking in a strange skin
or a strange bedroom
where the ceiling light
blazes one from sleep

And one sees a stranger's
reflection in the mirror
on an unknown wall

War does not matter
illness does not matter
hunger or hopelessness
rusting factories
crumbling hopes"
