Daily Show and Chris Hitchens

Hey, just wondering what everyone thought of Jon's interview with Hitch. I missed it Thursday night, so just watched it. I thought Jon was as animated and critical as I have seen him. In fact, dare I say it, I don't think I have ever seen anyone argue with Hitchens nearly as effectively.

Anyone else?

I saw it and enjoyed it thoroughly. I've been a fan of Hitchens for a long time. Oddly enough, when I was on the right, he was "the lefty I like." And now that I'm on the left, he's the, well, "righty that I like." Though to be fair, Hitch is still very much on the left. His support of the war and a generally hardline approach to things is not so much an endorsement of neocon petro policy but more in line with the anti-fascist fervor of the OLD left. And let's not forget that one of Hitch's books is called Letters to a Young Contrarian . He has a real stake in being curmudgeonly. In some way, I actually respect him for resisting the pigeonholes of the media circus. You think he'll say one thing, and most of time you'll be right, but then he'll hit you with an opinion you never saw coming. Plus he's a great writer. His book reviews in The Atlantic are a delight. Finally, he's an unapologetic smoker and Johnnie Walker scotch drinker.

As for Jon's part of the discussion, I thought it was great. I especially liked his points about expecting the president to answer questions "from adults like an adult" and not in platitudes. This is the type of thing that should be on Meet the Press.

I hope they post the interview on the website. I'd love to see it again.

They did indeed post the interview on the Daily Show's web site.

"You're doing it again, you're doing it again."

I would have appreciated more time to explore where the common ground was, because Hitchens' stands, while often unexpected, tend to be well thought out and principled. It wasn't entirely clear that Hitchens wasn't simply living up to his contrarian reputation, nor was it entirely clear what he was accusing Stewart of.

Did I mention Anglican is a flip flopper? At least he's FINALLY flipped to the right, er left, side.

Yes, Anglican flipped. I remember well when he used to defend the GOP party line. But then again, we all have closets full of bad choices!

Since his own blog is not very political, perhaps we could urge him to guest blog over here and talk about how he moved from a Republican stalwart to where he is now?

Bucky the Badger is welcome to guest post as well. CIL as well. Come on!

Lots of reasons for the change. The party I used to defend is not the party of today, but that's only part of it.

As for being a guest writer here (doing all I can to resist the use of "blog" as a verb), I'll think about it. At the moment I have other writing that is more pressing. But thank you for asking.
