As Americans, we have been very spoiled in terms of wars and natural disasters. Disasters with catastrophic damage in the US (earthquake, volcano eruption, hurricane) are few and far between. Aside from Pearl Harbor, the US has been basically immune to the domestic ravages of war after the Civil War. This has made us become complacent. It is, at least in part, from this complacency that stemmed 9/11 and the devastating effects, aftermath and response to the recent hurricane. We take it very much for granted that disasters only happen in other places, and wars don't hit home. We need to remember that we are not above being victims ourselves.
