Reid Clears Hurdle for Bush-Cheney Spying Bill
I called Reid's office this morning and then a few other Senators this afternoon. Reid's office claims that he opposes telecom immunity. Everything I read suggests otherwise. What kind of person suggests that we should issue a blank check for company actions when we don't even know the extent of their misdeeds? Oh, right. That kind.

One of the hardest things about following politics is all the bloody strategizing, where Politician X really opposes a position, but supports it on the record so that Politician Y can get credit for sinking it.
It's virtually impossible to know whether Reid intends for telecom immunity to fail strategically, or whether he or his staff are just lying.
I called four or five senators yesterday afternoon--all Democrats and all of whom had voted to table that bill that would have removed immunity. I asked their staffers if the senator had a stance on telecom immunity, and they all said no, they did not know where their senator stood. I told them about the vote and asked them to pass on my suggestion that this was terrible public policy.
I have no idea if that will help. It was the only thing I could do. Well, besides weep.
