Looks like an interesting book

h/t to Carlos for this: "Exiled: Voices of the Southern Baptist Convention Holy War is a compilation of first-person narratives by conservative and moderate ministers and lay leaders who were stripped of their positions and essentially became pariahs in the churches to which they had devoted their lives."

While in Houston, we saw the Southern Baptist fundy takeover in pretty personal ways. It certainly had an impact on my view of church. This book looks like an important look at the personal costs of the fundy's war on "liberals."

This looks interesting, indeed. It's on my list of things to read now. I've long wanted to find an "objective" history of the SBC--especially involving issues of race and gender--but for some reason those don't make it onto the shelves at Mardel's. If such books exist, I would welcome a friendly pointer to them.

Agreed. Add to that list a discussion of theology. When I was at South Main in the 80s, it seemed clear that there were a lot of people who held to a literal (and even innerrant) Bible who were run out of the SBC. Meanwhile, we were told it was about theological purity.
