America the Stupid

Well, not everyone, but those like Michelle Malkin who think a scarf=support for terrorism. Just when you think the right wingers could not get more ridiculous, this successful campaign by an unbelievably stupid person actually forces Dunkin Donuts to pull the ad.

Over at Kos, Hunter suggests that the terrorists should take this lesson to heart:
Why stop at scarves, after all? If Islamic militants wished to truly damage America, they should make pants a symbol of their jihad. All of conservative America would immediately go patriotically pantsless, and the collective loss of American appetites would render the entire nation weak and anemic and ripe for takeover.
Given stupid people like Malkin and others, this might just work.

My guess is even Michelle Malkin was shocked at how quickly Dunkin Donuts caved over something so ridiculous

Okay that does it. I saw some of those just yesterday in a shop. I think this calls for a sartorial "I am Spartacus" moment -- keffiyehs all around, folks!

It is time to stand up to the moral mafia.

Heh. Spartacus, indeed. Now, if Dunkin Donuts had not caved, I would think we could show our allegiance by eating donuts. Of course, we don't have a DD here in Norman any longer, but we could have found a substitute to show our solidarity.

I have heard similar complaints about that type of scarf, though I do remember them being somewhat popular when I was in college. From what I remember, most of the people wore them wanted to appear edgy, extreme, and hip, so I am not at all surprised that some people have different views of the symbolism.

Frankly, I could care less. DD's donuts are mediocre and I tend not to get all that worked up by symbols.

Steve, for me the issue is more that the rabid right wing has so lost sight of reality that they think this was some kind of coded support for terrorism. And Malkin may not be terribly powerful, but she does have a pretty dominant voice in the right and is frequently on Fox.

Streak, I agree, though it seems that there is a great deal of oversensitivity when it comes to symbols. Absent some kind of pro-Arafat statements from Rachel Ray, this specific critique is nuts.

Dunkin' Donuts are mediocre!? That's donutism! I refuse to tolerate such hate speech in the blogosphere. Streak, I question your judgment keeping company with those who would deride the sugary goodness that are Dunkin Donuts and the black silk that is its coffee. If such attacks continue, I shall have to denounce and reject the entire Streaksblog community.

Sounds like Michelle Malkin qualifies for a ticket to Gitmo to join the rest of the terrorists. George. Rommey. Cheney. A jolly old crowd. Too bad the place is already full of "furners and tearists from Eye rake and Aye ran."

DD does have pretty good coffee, but I stand by my donutistic claims. Locally, we have some much better choices. :P

Donuts are so third rail.

Who knew that donuts and Ms Pac Man were the real thorny issues on this blog? "Donutism?"

As an adonutist, I have to point out that arguing Dunkin vs Krispy Kreme vs Entenmanns vs Little Debbie is a lot like debating what color a unicorn's fur would be. Donuts are nothing more than a crutch; I can start my day just fine without reliance on a magical, mystical Breakfast Fairy, thank you very much.

I was all set to agree with Leighton until I realized he said adonutist and not anadonutists. Central to my position is theidea that we should not decide the superiority of donuts for our children, rather we should let them make their own decision on Dunkin v. Krispy Kreme v. Entemmans v. Little Debbie (or perhaps Sara Lee if you're feeling truly inclusive) once they have become adults. This matter is simply too important, and besides, once they are adults, they will certainly see the wisdom and the goodness that is the Dunkin Donut.

Your veneer of tolerance is belied by your obvious henodonutist bias. Why not be reasonable? I'm just like you, except that I believe in one less brand of donut.

Henodonuts are ok, but it seems like I always need more than 1 to be satisfied whereas with a good ol' Dunkin cake donut it only takes one.

What's this you were saying about a scarf again?

Streak said...

"henodonutist" and "anadonutists?"

Simply brilliant.

leighton said...

Scarves make great coverings for donuts. Now, if you'll excuse me, consistency being the hobgoblin of little minds and all that, I'm going to go have a donutist experience, which I will explain away as metaphysical panendonutist gobbledygook that has no bearing on physical reality.

OK. Streak's Blog has definitely gone off the deep end. ADMINISTRATOR!

Yeah. Like she reads this stuff.
