We are a Christian nation, so sit down and shut up

Two-Headed Blog notices this story about a California car dealership running this ad:
"“Did you know that there are people in this country who want prayer out of schools, “Under God” out of the Pledge, and “In God We Trust” to be taken off our money?

“But did you know that 86 percent of Americans say they believe in God? Now, since we all know that 86 out of every 100 of us are Christians who believe in God, we at Kieffe and Sons Ford wonder why we don’t just tell the other 14 percent to sit down and shut up."

The dealership apologized for the ad written by an Oklahoma firm (yay us), but the fact that this is out there is just disturbing.

Such a Christian way for the 86% to handle their overt influence on society. Just like Jesus would do, I would surmise.

And I still hold some ill-feelings toward you for the Ms. Pac-Man remark.

How timely. I'm in the market to buy a car. I'm in the 86 percent who believe in God, of course, but this dealer just lost 100 percent of my business.

I had forgotten that we can discuss politics and religion in cyberspace, but critiquing video games is the blogosphere's "third rail."

Aww, poor widdle oppressed majority.

Could've been worse, though; if they had said instead that 86% of Americans think video games are stupid, I might have had to do something actionable to their webservers.

I'm one of the 86%, but I'm not Christian. Neither are a decent portion of the others. Why do they assume it is only Christians who believe in God?
I hope his dealership shuts down due to lack of business because of this ad.

Look Tony, I'm being expressive again. :)

Bizarre ad. As one who believes in God, I find that offensive. As, probably, God does.

I guess I find it hard to get too worked up over a car dealership ad. You should hear/see some of the local ones we have here. --rolleyes--

As long as it is intellient, I don't mind critiques. I have been enjoying Wii Fit and GTA IV when I have some spare time.

I remember a car ad from a dealership near Houston. It was back in the 80s when the dominant concern was that the Japanese were buying up America. It was truly amazing. The ad started with a shot of Pearl Harbor and then talked about the Japanese imports.

It was unbelievably offensive. And while it is just a car ad, it does reflect beliefs in the culture. The good news about the one in this post is that it spurred both criticism and an apology.

Ultimately, for me, one of the more interesting things about a capitalist society is how things become commodified. The obvious ones, of course, are the goods and services that we buy and sell. But also we see things that are not commonly bought and sold, or at least, not considered commodities. When religious faith is just another commodity to be bought and sold, I would think that Christians would be very afraid. And many are, but most just shrug and don't even think about it.

Oh look, the owner has retracted his apology.

As an aside, "bloglodyte" would have been humorous if he hadn't been an illiterate dumbass and hyphenated it, twice.

Possibly more relevantly, the owner doesn't actually attend church.
