Camera advice?

We are shopping for a new camera and wondering if anyone has some suggestions. We want a compact model that we can easily carry in a pocket; has at least 8 megapixels (7 would probably do) and good reliable features. At this point, we are leaning toward Canon since we have had such good luck with them in the past.

Any suggestions out there?

Canon A720 IS -- it runs on 2 AA batteries, has a 6x optical zoom, and accepts different lenses that you can purchase for it.

that would be maybe a little big? Looks like a great camera, but our problem with bigger ones is that if they are hard to carry around, we just don't.

Streak- I've used a Canon 580 (I think) for a while. It's fairly small but only has 6megapixels (I've had it for a while) but I'm sure the replacement for it would be great. They're rated consistently pretty high. IF you want a smaller one the Canon Elphs are supposed to be pretty good. I just got the Girl a Nikon for the purse. I haven't had a chance to try it out, though. It was only about 100 bucks and is supposted to pretty good for just point and shoot.

Any of the Canons are nice - I've really liked the Panasonic Lumix series as well.

Maybe the A720IS is a bit bigger -- we like it for backpacking because of the AA batteries. We don't have to carry a charger. My husband and I both have pouches on the waistband of our backpacks that are handy for cameras --

We've used a Pentax Optio S4 for several years and have had no issues. I definitely fits the pocketability criterion, as we've always used an Altoids tin for a case. No kidding. Not sure if the current Optio S line (the S12 I believe) still fits in a Altoids can, but its worth a look.

In unrelated news but happy news, Jo and I are moving back to Norman in June. Looking forward to seeing you and SOF!

I probably should have noted that we decided to go with a Nikon for the best zoom we could find in a small camera. But thanks for the good advice.

and gblackwell, we will welcome you back to Norman for sure. Perhaps we can figure out some dinner plans!
